About Fort Sumner, NM
Fort Sumner is a city located in De Baca County in eastern New Mexico. It is well-known for being the site of the infamous Fort Sumner Indian Reservation, where the Navajo and Mescalero Apache tribes were forced to relocate by the United States government in the 1860s. Today, Fort Sumner is a small, rural community with a population of around 1,000 people. Visitors to the area can take a tour of the historic Fort Sumner State Monument, which includes a museum and the gravesite of the legendary outlaw, Billy the Kid. The city also hosts the annual Old Fort Days celebration, a rodeo and western-themed festival that attracts visitors from throughout the region.
